Separation Composting Toilet for Van - TROBOLO WandaGO
Combeing offers a simple and practical composting toilet.
Installation and use of the composting toilet for vans:
A product that delivers
This is a separation composting toilet designed and invented by one of the industry leaders: Trobolo. If you're not a toilet expert (which is understandable) and want to know the different options available for your van, everything is explained in our guide for toilets in campervans or motorhomes.
For us, the important factors were to have a composting toilet (using sawdust) that is practical, sturdy, and eco-friendly.
How it works and how to use it
The principle is rather simple, just like at home (except for flushing), since the kit is complete. Installation proceeds as follows:
- Detach the bottom part of the composting toilet, rotate it 90°, and simply position it on top.
- Open the lid of the portable composting toilet.
- Use the toilet, checking beforehand for the presence of the bag and the remaining capacity in the tank.
- Cover the waste with a small amount of sawdust and wood shavings contained in your bucket.
- Dispose of or bury the plastic (if biodegradable, of course) from time to time, and empty the urine tank when necessary.
Advantages and Disadvantages of a Portable Toilet
Advantages of Portable Toilets
There are many advantages to choosing a portable toilet. Indeed, you can easily move your separation composting toilet outside, to be discreet under a shower tent like the one offered by Decathlon, on days when there are many people inside the campervan or motorhome.
Another advantage is that if you go out for a sporting activity or plan to camp, you don’t have to bring your composting toilet in your van/camper. Leave it at home and save space for your bike rack, for example.
You’ve understood, this portable toilet fits perfectly into our concept of a modular and removable setup kit; it’s all about simplicity — take it with you whenever you want!
Easy to empty, you just need to throw the bag in a waste bin or bury it (if it's a biodegradable bag, of course!).
Disadvantages of a Portable Composting Toilet
There are few, if any, disadvantages to portable composting toilets.
Even though chemical toilets are mostly found in motorhomes (and less in vans), it is a misconception to think that they are more convenient than separation composting toilets.
Indeed, with a portable chemical toilet, it can be difficult to find a dedicated disposal point (like a campsite or RV park).
For ecology, there’s no question: that blue liquid smelling of chemicals does not come from nature... unlike the wood shavings or sawdust used in composting toilets.
Don’t hesitate to opt for portable composting toilets; they are the type of toilet that fits best with van camping and road trips in general.
What about odors with these toilets?
You might think that the separation composting toilet has a strong smell. You’ll be surprised, but the answer is NO!
When you use it, there may be a slight odor in the van, but it dissipates within 3 minutes.
Of course, you must cover the waste with a small amount of wood shavings and sawdust. And, as with a pet's litter after several uses, you need to change it (in our case, throw the biodegradable bag away) to prevent long-term odors. The same applies to the liquid tank.
By following these recommendations, you will not have odors. They will be almost nonexistent compared to the odors of the blue liquid from portable chemical toilets!
What other accessories should I consider for my portable composting toilet?
The world of composting toilets/portable toilets is new to you, and you want to make sure you don’t forget anything before hitting the road in your van? Don’t worry, we’re here to help and provide some tips. To complement the main items below, more detailed information is also available in our article: Everything you need to know about composting toilets.
Bags for Portable Toilets
There’s no doubt: choose compostable bags to place in your separation toilet. There are bags labeled "OK Compost" that are biodegradable in a matter of days.
Sawdust and Shavings
Be careful, we told you there are few or no odors in a portable composting toilet. But you must remember to cover the organic matter with sawdust and wood shavings after each use. You can buy them or find them at sawmills where the wood (pine or fir) will be natural. Avoid chemically treated woods.
Eco-Friendly Toilet Paper
Statistics show that the annual use of toilet paper is impressive! So, don’t hesitate to spend a few extra cents on eco-friendly toilet paper, especially if you plan to bury your waste.
Where to Empty the Trobolo System?
It couldn’t be simpler! You are not required to keep everything in your van for several days. Here’s how to proceed:
- For plastic, you can place it in a regular trash can or bury it (choose this option if the bag is biodegradable, of course).
- For the urine tank, we recommend diluting it with a bit of water. This will create a very good nitrogen-rich fertilizer for watering plants, for example. It’s convenient not to have chemical products!
